KARACHI: Tensions flared in Karachi after a motorcycle accident involving a heavy vehicle led to violent protests, during which at least 11 dumpers and tankers were set ablaze across the city.

The unrest began after a speeding dumper truck struck a motorcyclist in the Nagan Chowrangi area of North Karachi. The injured rider, identified as 23-year-old Daniyal, was rushed to a local hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

In response to the incident, enraged citizens launched a wave of arson attacks on heavy vehicles in various parts of the city. According to police sources, five dumpers were torched near the North Karachi Power House. Meanwhile, in the Madiha Stop area of North Karachi, demonstrators set fire to three water tankers and an ice truck.

The violence continued in Surjani Town near Baba Mor, where another water tanker was targeted and set ablaze by protestors. Law enforcement agencies responded quickly, deploying a large police contingent to the affected areas. Fire brigade teams also arrived promptly to douse the flames and remove the charred remains of the vehicles from the roads.

The incidents have raised concerns over traffic safety and the growing frustration among citizens regarding the movement of heavy vehicles in densely populated areas.

In light of rising road accidents involving dumpers and other heavy vehicles, traffic authorities have initiated several safety measures. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah recently emphasized the importance of monitoring and regulating heavy traffic in the city.

As part of the new strategy, all dumper trucks operating in Karachi are required to install front and rear-view cameras. These installations aim to aid authorities in identifying the responsible parties in case of accidents. Additionally, trackers will be fitted to monitor vehicle speeds and movements through a centralized traffic control room.

The initiative is expected to improve road safety and help prevent tragic incidents like the one that sparked the recent protests.
