Pakistan's military said on Wednesday that it had repelled a cross-border raid by a large group of terrorists from Afghanistan. The attack targeted two military posts in the general area of Kalash in Chitral district.
The military said that during the exchange of fire, at least 12 terrorists were killed and four Pakistani soldiers were martyred. The military's media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said that the security forces were already on high alert due to the heightened threat environment.
"The valiant soldiers fought bravely and repulsed the attacks, inflicting heavy casualties on the terrorists," the ISPR said. "During the exchange of fire, 12 terrorists were sent to hell, while a large number were critically injured."
The ISPR also said that the security forces had launched a search operation in the area to track down the remaining terrorists.
The attack comes at a time when Pakistan is facing increased security threats from terrorist groups operating from Afghanistan. In recent months, there have been a number of cross-border attacks by terrorists from Afghanistan.
The Pakistani government has repeatedly called on the Afghan government to take action against these terrorist groups. However, the Afghan government has so far been unable to do so.
The attack in Chitral is a reminder of the serious security challenges that Pakistan faces. The Pakistani government will need to continue to take steps to strengthen its security forces and to work with the Afghan government to eliminate the threat posed by terrorist groups.
