Diplomats urge Gaza ceasefire as UN Security Council pushes for peace

UNITED NATIONS: Diplomats at the United Nations Security Council are calling for a swift conclusion to negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, with growing pressure to prevent a return to hostilities.

The discussions follow a tense ceasefire that has held since February 24, 2025, despite ongoing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Sigrid Kaag, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, addressed the council, stressing that a return to war would have devastating consequences. “The resumption of hostilities must be avoided at all costs. I call on both sides to fully honor their commitment to the ceasefire,” Kaag said, reinforcing the importance of diplomacy and further negotiations.

The Security Council's meeting came amid reports from Gaza, where Palestinians were seen walking through the rubble of buildings destroyed during Israel's offensive. The ongoing ceasefire offers a fragile moment of peace, but the situation remains volatile, with both sides under international scrutiny for potential violations of the terms.

Negotiations for the next phase of the ceasefire are crucial for achieving long-term stability. Both Israel and Hamas have shown mixed responses to the pressure from the international community, but diplomats are deteremined to push for continued talks in hopes of avoiding the further escalation of violence.

As the Security Council convened, humanitarian groups also voiced concerns about the dire living conditions in Gaza, where millions of residents continue to suffer from shortages of essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid.

The international community remains vigilant, urging both sides to respect the ceasefire terms and work towards a more sustainable and peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
