In the southern border city of Rafah in Gaza, where 1.5 million people have sought refuge, the customary generous iftar meal, which marks the end of the day's fast, was substituted with "canned food and beans," according to Mohammad al-Masry, a displaced resident from Khan Younis.
"We didn't prepare anything. What resources do displaced people have?" al-Masry lamented. "We are devoid of the usual joy of Ramadan... Just observe the people enduring the cold in tents."
Om Muhammad Abu Matar, also displaced from Khan Younis, conveyed to AFP that this year's Ramadan has been imbued with "the taste of blood and misery, separation, and oppression."
