ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) responded to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) assertion that their chairman, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is a 'prisoner of conscience' due to his imprisonment related to various cases, including misuse of a diplomatic cypher.
The PTI presented a 24-point Charter of Demand to the ECP, highlighting Imran Khan's status as a 'prisoner of conscience.' However, in a concise response issued on November 22, the ECP stated that Imran Khan is incarcerated in different cases, including the cypher case, rejecting the characterization of him as a 'prisoner of conscience.'
The PTI also alleged victimization and political persecution, but the ECP disclaimed any responsibility in these matters, stating its lack of involvement in alleged victimization or coercion of party members.
Regarding concerns raised by the PTI about a lack of a level-playing field, pre-poll rigging, release of funds, and permissions for political meetings, the ECP reiterated its commitment to ensuring a fair electoral process, issuing directives to caretaker governments and emphasizing the provision of a level-playing field for all political parties.
Moreover, in response to PTI's objections regarding the conduct of meetings by other parties and the treatment of Imran Khan compared to other political figures, the ECP assured fairness in allowing political gatherings and pledged to address concerns regarding disproportionate treatment.
Concerning manufacturing PTI materials and airtime on media platforms, the ECP requested specific evidence and assured further consideration with relevant authorities.
The ECP clarified that the election schedule would be announced after finalizing constituency lists and explained its decision on delimitation, emphasizing adherence to constitutional provisions to ensure transparent and inclusive elections.
