Electricity prices set to fall further, says PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed his government’s commitment to reducing electricity tariffs, stating that further cuts are in the pipeline as part of broader efforts to provide economic relief to the public.

Chairing a high-level meeting in Islamabad, the prime minister said that despite the ongoing decline in global oil prices, the government has decided to prioritise lowering power tariffs over reducing petrol prices. “Efforts are ongoing to bring down electricity prices further. As petroleum prices fall in the global market, we will once again focus on reducing electricity tariffs rather than petrol,” he said.

Shehbaz Sharif emphasised that cheaper electricity will have a widespread positive impact, benefiting all sectors of the economy. “A cut in electricity prices will benefit the nation in every field. We are striving for further reductions and hope to see even better results in the coming months,” he noted.

He reiterated that providing affordable energy is a key component of the government’s economic strategy aimed at supporting industries, easing household expenses, and stimulating overall economic growth. “Our goal is to ensure that the relief reaches everyone, from homes to factories,” he added.

In addition to energy reforms, PM Shehbaz highlighted the government’s focus on developing the maritime sector, which he described as vital for the country’s long-term economic development. He lauded the efforts of the Maritime Task Force, praising their policy recommendations and commitment to revitalising the sector. “Access to maritime resources is essential for global development, and we are moving in the right direction,” he said.

The prime minister also linked recent power tariff reductions with broader macroeconomic progress, stating that the government’s reforms are helping stabilize the economy. “We have achieved macroeconomic stability, and the decline in power tariffs will lead the economy towards growth and competitiveness,” he said.

He concluded by assuring the public that the government will continue working to pass on the benefits of falling global oil prices to the people, primarily through reductions in electricity costs.
