KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) senior leader Farooq Sattar has praised the government's recent decision to reduce electricity prices by 12 to 17 percent, calling it a major relief for consumers. The announcement, made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was welcomed by many as a positive step towards easing the financial burden on Pakistani households.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, Sattar emphasized that this price reduction was directly linked to MQM-P's efforts within the coalition government. He explained that lowering electricity costs and addressing water supply issues had been the party's top priorities during their participation in the current government. He took particular pride in MQM-P's role in negotiating and facilitating the reduction in power tariffs.
The price decrease, which applies to approximately 40.3 million consumers, has already made a noticeable difference for many households. Sattar highlighted that some consumers had seen their electricity bills drop from Rs 10,000 to Rs 8,500, illustrating the tangible benefits of the reduction.
Looking ahead, Farooq Sattar expressed optimism about the upcoming national budget, suggesting that further economic relief might be on the horizon. He expressed hope that the budget would result in a reduction of interest rates from 12% to 9%, making loans more accessible to the public. He acknowledged that while the full impact of these measures might take time, they represented significant progress in the government’s economic policies.
The reduction in electricity prices, announced on Thursday, is part of the seasonal tariff adjustments and an increase in the budget-neutral subsidy. This move aims to boost consumption from the national grid while providing financial relief to struggling families. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government is working to address the concerns of millions of Pakistani households, with a focus on making essential services more affordable for the public.
