The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has reportedly issued notices to more than 8 million individuals who have not filed taxes, as per sources within the tax collection agency. These notices were distributed under the Income Tax General Order.
Details reveal a total of 8.19 million notices sent to non-filers, comprising over 2.4 million for 2022 and over 5.6 million for 2023.
FBR emphasized that action will be taken against those who do not respond to the notices. In the subsequent phase, telephone connections of unregistered individuals will be disconnected.
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar highlighted the significance of revenue generation and the need to increase the number of tax filers in recent discussions.
The FBR board announced the establishment of district tax offices as a new initiative aimed at expanding the tax base and elevating the tax-to-GDP ratio to desired levels. These offices, headed by District Tax Officers, are tasked with ensuring Income Tax Returns compliance from non-filers and those who have stopped filing, according to an official press release.
