The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has finalized a strategy to expand the tax base by imposing taxes on retailers in Pakistan.

In the initial phase, the FBR plans to levy taxes on retailers in the four provincial capitals, anticipating an income of approximately Rs100 billion. The taxation will be based on the size of the shops and their yearly income. Retailers will be registered using the "Dost App."

The imposition of taxes on 3.5 million retailers nationwide is expected to contribute Rs300 billion to the national revenue. In December 2023, the FBR achieved a historic milestone by collecting Rs1.021 trillion, surpassing both monthly and six-month targets. The target for the first six months was Rs.4425 billion, exceeding expectations with a collection of Rs.4468 billion after adjusting for Rs38 billion in issued refunds during the month.
