Crackdown on Gold Smuggling and 'Gold Mafia' Launched by Intelligence and Law Enforcement Agencies
Islamabad: In a significant development, intelligence and law enforcement agencies have initiated a major operation to combat the illicit trade of gold and dismantle what's commonly referred to as the 'gold mafia.' This operation, as reported by a private news agency on Friday, aims to address the issue of gold smuggling head-on.
Reliable sources indicate that a specialized task force, comprising various agencies, has been established to take assertive actions against illegal activities related to gold. The primary objective behind forming this task force is to apprehend smugglers involved in unlawful gold trade and subsequently initiate legal actions against them.
Furthermore, it has come to light that the task force has compiled lists of individuals associated with the gold mafia and smuggling networks, with imminent actions slated against them.
In addition to these efforts, the government has also made a strategic decision to expedite the computerization of gold sales and purchases, bringing gold dealers within the tax jurisdiction. This move is anticipated to benefit both citizens and the nation as a whole, especially considering the ongoing decline in gold prices.
It's worth noting that over the past two weeks, the price of gold has seen a noticeable drop, plummeting from Rs236,000 per tola to Rs214,000 per tola.
