Heatwave grips Karachi with hot, humid weather

KARACHI: Karachi is currently experiencing a heatwave, with the Meteorological Department forecasting hot and humid weather for the next 24 hours. The city is expected to see temperatures ranging between 39°C to 41°C, while the minimum temperature recorded so far is 25°C.

The humidity level in the air is at 46%, with hot and dry winds blowing from the northwest at 4 km/h. The heatwave is set to persist until April 23, 2025, with the Meteorological Office confirming that temperatures will remain 4°C to 6°C higher than normal during this period.

Residents of Karachi had been warned on Sunday by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) about the heatwave conditions, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 41°C. The shift in wind patterns and the temporary halt in the sea breeze are expected to exacerbate the heat. PMD Deputy Director Anjum Zaigham explained that northwesterly winds would cut off the sea breeze, worsening the heat and making conditions even more uncomfortable.

Medical experts have advised citizens to take precautions, urging them not to leave their homes unnecessarily from 11 am to 4 pm, when the heat will be most intense. In the meantime, the rest of the plains are also experiencing hot and dry weather, with the highest temperature recorded in Jacobabad at 43°C.

While Karachi is sweltering, heavy rain and thundershowers in Swat, Mingora, and nearby areas have brought a welcome drop in temperature, offering some relief.
