ISLAMABAD: Heatwave conditions have intensified across Pakistan, with the Met Office forecasting temperatures above 40°C in several regions, particularly in Sindh and southern Punjab.
In Sindh, the mercury is expected to climb to 46°C in Dadu, 45°C in Nawabshah, and 43°C in Sukkur and Hyderabad today. Karachi will experience hot and humid weather, with maximum temperatures reaching around 36°C.
Southern Punjab is also bracing for high heat, with temperatures projected at 40°C in Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Sargodha, and 37°C in Lahore.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported that a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, which began forming on April 13, is responsible for the intensifying heatwave conditions. These conditions are expected to persist across the country until April 18.
Daytime temperatures in southern regions including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan are forecasted to remain 6 to 8°C above normal. In central and northern areas—such as Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir—temperatures will range from 4 to 6°C above seasonal norms.
Nights will also remain unusually warm during this period. The extreme heat may trigger dust storms and windstorms in some areas, increasing health and safety risks.
Authorities have issued a public advisory urging people, especially children, the elderly, and women, to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities, limit sun exposure, and stay well hydrated. Precautionary measures are recommended to prevent heat-related illnesses.
