ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued directives on Wednesday for the release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Shehryar Afridi and Shandana Gulzar Khan, who were detained under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO).
The court has instructed that Shehryar Afridi is not to leave Islamabad, while also demanding the Islamabad inspector-general of police (IGP) and deputy commissioner (DC) to ensure his safety and security.
Shehryar Afridi was initially arrested following riots on May 9 and was rearrested on May 30 under Section 3 of the MPO Ordinance 1960. After securing bail from the Lahore High Court's Rawalpindi bench, he was detained again by the Rawalpindi Police earlier this month.
On the other hand, Shandana Gulzar Khan was reportedly "abducted" on August 9 by the Islamabad Police. Her mother filed a petition with the IHC, citing "illegal arrest" and violation of Articles 4, 9, 10A, and 14 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
Both individuals appeared before the IHC as per relevant procedures. The court has nullified the detention orders under the MPO and ordered their release.
