ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Deputy Commissioner (DC) and SSP operations indicted for contempt of court in PTI leaders' detention case.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has indicted Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Jamil Zafar, along with other officers, for contempt of court. This action stems from the prolonged detention of PTI leaders Shehryar Afridi and Shandana Gulzar under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance.
Earlier, the IHC had stripped the district magistrate's power to detain suspects under the MPO. Afridi and Gulzar were arrested in connection with May 9 violence, but the IHC ordered their release on August 16. The DC and SSP were indicted after the court found their responses "unsatisfactory."
During the proceedings, DC Memon offered an apology, which was rejected, and he was indicted. SSP Zafar sought time to defend himself, while SP Farooq Buttar and SHO Nasir Manzoor were also indicted.
The IHC had issued show-cause notices to other police officials for "criminal contempt of court for abuse of authority." The court is taking a strong stance on this matter, emphasizing the importance of upholding court orders."
