A resident of Karachi has initiated legal proceedings against K-Electric due to the receipt of an extremely high electricity bill. Abdul Khaliq, residing in Shah Rasool Colony, Clifton, Karachi, has filed a formal petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) challenging K-Electric's issuance of three electricity bills totaling Rs 598,000.

Khaliq informed the court that he was accused of power theft without prior notice. In response, the court inquired about his electricity consumption, to which Khaliq's legal representative clarified that he is considered a 'star customer' by K-Electric.

The court, in a preliminary ruling, instructed Khaliq to settle the current bill and postponed the hearing regarding any outstanding dues to October 12.

Furthermore, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has given the green light to an increase in electricity tariffs by Rs1.71 per unit. This adjustment, approved under fuel adjustment charges (FAC) for the month of August, will be reflected in consumers' bills in October. It's important to note that Lifeline and K-Electric customers will be exempt from this rate hike.

In a separate decision on October 3, NEPRA also approved a per-unit electricity price increase of Rs 3.28 as part of the quarterly adjustment.
