KARACHI: Karachi dairy farmers have approached the Sindh High Court (SHC) seeking an increase in the price of milk. Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, heard the plea of the dairy farmers, who requested the court to set the milk rate at Rs 229 per liter.

The Sindh government's lawyer informed the court that the retail price of milk was fixed at Rs 200 per liter last October, and the current demand for a price hike is specific to dairy farmers aiming for higher profits.

The SHC Chief Justice noted that the court cannot intervene in matters of profit, as they are determined by market forces. The SHC adjourned the hearing until May 28 after summoning records from the Karachi commissioner's office. Last week, the Karachi commissioner approved a Rs 10 per liter increase in the milk price in response to the Dairy Farmers' Association's demand. Consequently, milk is now being sold at Rs 210 per liter in Karachi shops as per the commissioner's directive.
