KARACHI: The electricity tariff is likely to decrease by Rs6.62 per unit, in major relief for K-Electric consumers.
K-Electric has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking a reduction in electricity prices under the fuel cost adjustment for February. NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on the matter on April 16.
If approved, this proposed reduction could result in relief of over Rs6.66 billion for consumers in Karachi, offering much-needed financial ease amid rising living costs.
This development follows a major announcement by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding a nationwide cut in electricity tariffs. Speaking at a recent event, the prime minister revealed that the government has decided to reduce the electricity tariff by Rs7.41 per unit for domestic consumers and Rs7.59 per unit for industrial users. He termed this move as a significant relief for the public, particularly as the nation prepares to celebrate Eid.
The premier expressed optimism that this initiative would stimulate economic activity and benefit both households and businesses. He also highlighted the outcome of successful negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), which are expected to yield savings of approximately Rs3,696 billion.
Addressing the pressing issue of circular debt, which currently stands at Rs2,393 billion, the prime minister said the government has put in place necessary arrangements to manage it. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of tackling power theft—estimated at Rs600 billion annually—and announced plans to either privatize power distribution companies or transfer their control to provincial authorities.
