KARACHI: Karachi is about to see a significant transformation in its public transport system, with the Sindh government set to introduce 5 double-decker buses and 34 electric buses as part of the Peoples Bus Service (PBS) expansion. The first batch of buses is expected to arrive in June, followed by an additional 100 buses later in the month.

Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh’s Minister for Information and Transport, confirmed that the formalities for importing these buses are almost complete. The initiative is designed to provide affordable, eco-friendly, and efficient public transportation for Karachi’s residents, aiming to reduce congestion and pollution in the city.

This new fleet is part of a broader effort to modernize Karachi’s transport infrastructure. By introducing double-decker buses and electric vehicles (EVs), the government plans to cater to the increasing demand for public transport while ensuring environmental sustainability. The government also plans to phase out defective and unsafe commercial vehicles that are currently operating in the city, promoting safety and efficiency in public transit.

In addition to the new buses, the transport department will soon introduce a new bus route that will utilize Green Line and Orange Line vehicles. This new route will enhance connectivity across the city, making travel more convenient for Karachi's residents. Furthermore, the Sindh government is set to launch a Pink EV Scooter scheme specifically for women, aiming to provide them with an affordable and safe mode of transport.

These efforts are a part of the Sindh government’s commitment to improving Karachi’s transportation system, with an emphasis on sustainability, innovation, and inclusivity. With the introduction of double-decker buses, electric buses, and new schemes like the Pink EV Scooters, Karachi's public transport landscape is set to undergo a much-needed overhaul, offering reliable, green alternatives for its growing population
