KARACHI: The Karachi Traffic Police took swift action after a viral video surfaced showing a speeding dumper evading arrest on Shahrah-e-Faisal, despite efforts by a patrolling officer to stop it. The incident led to an immediate crackdown by the authorities, with DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah stating that the action was prompted by the Dumper Association’s failure to uphold its previous commitments.

The overnight operation resulted in the seizure of 27 dumpers, the issuance of fines to 142 vehicles, and the arrest of one driver for violating traffic regulations. DIG Shah mentioned that the police had ordered the Dumper Association to surrender both the dumper and the driver involved in the incident. However, Liaquat Mehsud, president of the Dumper Association, initially requested time but later backtracked on his promises, further escalating the situation.

DIG Shah emphasized that the crackdown would continue until the driver responsible for the incident was apprehended, reiterating that "no one is above the law." This move comes in response to rising concerns about heavy vehicles, including dumpers, trailers, and trucks, causing fatal accidents in Karachi.

In a separate incident, a trailer was involved in a tragic accident early on Sunday near Boulton Market, where it crushed two youths to death. The police saved the driver, Abid Ali, from an angry mob and took him into custody. The deceased, identified as Noor Muhammad and Zahid, were from the Usmanabad area of Lyari. The police registered a case against the driver for reckless driving.

The ongoing issue of heavy vehicles causing fatalities has led to widespread public frustration, with multiple incidents of accidents and angry mobs targeting drivers. A recent incident saw 11 heavy vehicles set on fire after a tragic accident in North Karachi. Citizens and authorities alike have expressed concerns over the lack of road safety measures in the city, where the absence of a proper public transport system forces many people to rely on two-wheelers, further contributing to the rising number of accidents.
