A special court has extended the judicial remand of PTI Chairman Imran Khan till September 13 in the cipher case, his lawyer confirmed on Wednesday.
The case pertains to a diplomatic document which reportedly went missing from Imran's possession. The PTI alleges that it contained a threat from the United States to oust Imran from power. Proceedings against Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the PTI vice chairman and former foreign minister, are also under way in the same case.
The extension of Imran's remand comes a day after the Islamabad High Court suspended his three-year jail sentence in the Toshakhana case. In that case, Imran was convicted of misusing government funds to purchase gifts for his personal use.
The special court had directed the authorities of Attock District Jail, where the PTI chief is currently incarcerated, to keep him in "judicial lockup" and produce him today in connection with the cipher case.
Imran's lawyer, Babar Awan, said that he will challenge the extension of his client's remand in the Islamabad High Court.
The cipher case is one of several cases that Imran is facing since he was ousted from power in April. The PTI has accused the government of using the courts to target its political opponents.
