KARACHI: The Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) achieved a pivotal milestone as it was officially designated as a university, following the passage of the Karachi Metropolitan University Bill in the Sindh Assembly.
This transformation was solidified with a gazette notification, elevating KMDC to Karachi Metropolitan University.
During the announcement, Mayor Karachi, Murtaza Wahab, highlighted the fulfillment of a promise by the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) to the Central District residents, emphasizing the amplified significance of the institution after its transition to a university.
Mayor Murtaza Wahab affirmed his unwavering dedication to enhancing the standards of KMDC and pledged his commitment to its improvement.
However, in 2022, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) strongly opposed the Sindh government's decision, denouncing it as an attempt by the ruling PPP to seize urban resources and undermine local government administration. The MQM-P's coordination committee demanded the immediate retraction of the decision and asserted its intention to employ all lawful and democratic means to protest against what they deemed the PPP government's undemocratic stance.
Despite opposition from MQM lawmakers, the Sindh Assembly forwarded the Karachi Metropolitan University Bill to the standing committee of relevant authorities.
