Islamabad: In a significant move aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s seafood exports and promoting sustainable development in the maritime sector, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, has directed the immediate upgradation of the Korangi Fisheries Harbour Authority (KoFHA) to meet international standards.
The directive was issued during a high-level meeting in Islamabad with KoFHA’s Managing Director, Dr. Shahid Mirza.
Located in Karachi, the Korangi Fisheries Harbour is a vital component of Pakistan’s seafood infrastructure and plays a pivotal role in managing fisheries-related activities. The facility, under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, is designed as an industrial zone for seafood processing and trade. However, challenges related to outdated infrastructure and substandard processing methods have hindered its full potential.
Minister Junaid Chaudhry underscored the critical need to modernize both the physical infrastructure and operational practices at the harbour to bring them in line with global seafood processing and export standards. “The global seafood market demands the highest quality and hygiene protocols,” the Minister stated. “If we are to compete effectively and expand our exports, upgrading facilities like Korangi Fish Harbour is no longer optional—it’s a necessity.”
He further emphasized that the upgradation is not only intended to boost exports but also to improve working conditions for local fishermen and workers who are the backbone of the maritime economy. “Improving livelihoods must go hand-in-hand with economic development. Our fishermen deserve access to modern facilities that support their hard work and contribute to long-term prosperity,” the Minister added.
During the meeting, Dr. Shahid Mirza briefed the Minister on the current status and challenges faced by KoFHA. He acknowledged the urgency of the task and assured that the authority is fully committed to executing a comprehensive modernization plan. Dr. Mirza outlined potential upgrades, including the introduction of cold storage units, hygienic auction halls, advanced seafood processing plants, and training programs for workers in handling and packaging.
The Minister also called for inclusive development strategies that prioritize the needs of the local fishing community. He directed KoFHA to initiate programs that improve access to modern technology, provide financial literacy training, and support the economic empowerment of fishermen.
“This initiative forms a key part of our broader Blue Economy strategy, which envisions sustainable growth through responsible use of marine resources,” Minister Chaudhry said. “By upgrading Korangi Fish Harbour, we’re aiming to increase seafood exports, attract foreign investment, and generate employment in our coastal areas.”
Dr. Mirza expressed gratitude to the Minister for his leadership and assured full alignment with the government’s vision. He pledged immediate action to engage with stakeholders, accelerate planning, and implement necessary improvements in a transparent and efficient manner.
The government’s renewed focus on marine infrastructure signals a progressive shift towards realizing the untapped potential of Pakistan’s maritime sector, with Korangi Fisheries Harbour positioned as a cornerstone of this transformation.
