The Lahore High Court (LHC) has instructed the Punjab government to submit a response to a petition demanding action against those responsible for the expired stents scandal at the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC).

During a hearing on Monday, LHC Justice Raheel Kamran granted time to the caretaker Punjab government's counsel to prepare and submit a reply to the petition.

The high court directed the Punjab government to provide its response to the expired stents case within a week.

Previously, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) report revealed that 38 patients at the PIC were implanted with a total of 39 expired stents last year.

According to the FIA's preliminary report on the use of expired stents, 500 stents were purchased from a private company in 2019.

These stents were intended for insertion in 2020 but were instead implanted in patients even after 19 months past their expiry date.

The report also revealed that despite having access to stents, the PIC continued to request them from other hospitals, suggesting malicious intent in the case.
