Mustafa Qureshi urges establishment of SFDC to revive film industry

KARACHI: Legendary actor Mustafa Qureshi has emphasized the critical need for the establishment of a "Sindh Film Development Corporation" (SFDC) to revive Pakistan’s struggling film industry. Speaking at an Iftar dinner at his residence, Qureshi expressed concerns over the current crises facing the cinema industry, highlighting its destruction due to a lack of films. This decline has led to widespread unemployment among thousands of individuals associated with the industry across the country.

The event was attended by several notable figures, including filmstars Sangeeta and Mumtaz, former Sindh Minister Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq, President of Arts Council Ahmed Shah, senior journalist Mazhar Abbas, and others. During his speech, Qureshi proposed the creation of SFDC, which would focus on producing films in all languages spoken in Pakistan. This, he believes, would not only provide employment opportunities but also strengthen the country’s film industry.

Pir Mazhar-ul-Haq supported Qureshi’s proposal, suggesting that the Sindh government could model a revenue-generating deck similar to Naif Deck to benefit the industry. Ahmed Shah, echoing the sentiment, said Qureshi’s suggestion was practical and could lead to significant growth for the industry. Mazhar Abbas also commended Ahmed Shah as the most competent person to lead SFDC.

The event concluded with participants thanking Mustafa Qureshi for organizing the Iftar dinner and discussing ways to address the ongoing challenges facing Pakistan’s film industry.
