The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has sanctioned a Rs 2.87 per unit hike in electricity tariffs for Karachi upon the request of K-Electric.

This adjustment, attributed to the quarterly fuel update, marks a cumulative burden of Rs 4.12 on power consumers in Karachi for the January-March 2023 period.

The approved increment has been forwarded to the federal government for official notification. NEPRA previously greenlit a Rs 1.72 per unit surge for K-Electric users, encompassing adjustments for the third quarter of the past financial year. This comprised Rs 1.25 per unit for January-March 2023 and Rs 0.47 per unit for October-December 2022.

While NEPRA has relayed the tariff hike decision to the federal government, Karachi's electricity consumers are expected to incur additional charges in their bills from January to March 2024.
