Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar emphasized the financial challenges facing Pakistan and the burden imposed by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) operating at a loss during a high-level meeting on the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) issue.
In attendance were Caretaker Minister for Privatization Fawad Hassan Fawad, Adviser to PM Ahad Cheema, and other relevant authorities.
During the meeting, the prime minister expressed concerns about delays in decision-making regarding PIA's issues. He urged the acceleration of the privatization process for PIA and other loss-making SOEs, emphasizing that public tax funds should not be used to cover their losses. He also highlighted the potential for improved public services through reforms in the aviation sector.
The caretaker prime minister stressed the importance of transparency in the privatization process and called for accountability to be established for losses, ensuring that necessary measures are taken to prevent further financial setbacks.
The meeting provided an update on PIA's financial situation and the progress in its privatization process, indicating that obstacles in the privatization process had been resolved. The prime minister directed the swift privatization of the national flag carrier to alleviate the burden on the national treasury.
