ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday announced a major step forward in Pakistan’s digital transformation, declaring that the scope of digital wallets would be expanded nationwide under a coordinated framework that includes all provinces.
Speaking at a ceremony recognizing outstanding contributors to the success of the Prime Minister's Ramazan Relief Package, the prime minister emphasized the effectiveness of digital payment methods in ensuring transparency and preserving the dignity of recipients. He highlighted that 79% of the funds under the programme were disbursed through digital wallets, enabling smoother, faster, and more transparent transactions.
“The previous payment systems were riddled with flaws, but our modern digital systems have fixed many of those issues,” the prime minister said, according to a statement from the PM Office Media Wing. “The positive results we’ve seen have encouraged us to further expand the scope of digital wallets across the country.”
He added that the government plans to utilize digital methods for 100% of relief fund disbursements in the next year, signaling a shift toward a more tech-driven and efficient welfare infrastructure.
Secretary of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Amir Ahmed Ali, also delivered a comprehensive briefing during the ceremony on how digital wallets played a central role in the disbursement process under the Ramazan Relief Package.
Separately, on the occasion of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, observed globally on April 28, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to strengthening worker protection frameworks. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of adapting to technological advancements while safeguarding the health, safety, and dignity of all workers.
“This year’s theme, ‘Revolutionizing Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalization at Work’, reminds us that technology should serve to enhance workplace conditions,” he said. “As we digitize workplaces, ensuring safety and well-being must remain a core objective.”
Meanwhile, the premier also met with Saima Naureen, Project Director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), and lauded her performance in overseeing modern agricultural training programmes for Pakistani students in China, reflecting the government's focus on global collaboration and innovation in education.
The initiatives announced reflect the government’s broader strategy to digitalize public services, improve transparency, and foster inclusive economic development across Pakistan.
