Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has issued a clear directive to authorities to take swift action against defaulters and power thieves, particularly in the face of ongoing protests against inflated electricity bills. During a meeting in Islamabad focused on the power sector, PM Kakar stressed that no concessions should be granted in this operation.
The meeting provided an extensive overview of Pakistan's electricity generation potential, installed capacity, actual generation, and power distribution across various weather conditions. Additionally, the caretaker PM was briefed on the country's energy sector, including the energy mix in power production.
PM Kakar emphasized prioritizing renewable and hydel sources for producing cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy. He also called for reducing line losses in power distribution, implementing the transformer metering project, and planning small hydel power projects under expert guidance.
Furthermore, PM Kakar advocated for the utilization of local coal in coal power generation and directed the immediate commencement of work on a 2400 MW solar power project, emphasizing transparency in the process. He also pledged government efforts to reduce the power sector's circular debt and discussed progress on establishing the electricity energy market in Pakistan.
