ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari addressed the joint session of Parliament, marking the start of the new parliamentary year amid opposition protests. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, federal ministers, and key political figures attended the session.
He emphasized good governance, political stability, and economic growth, urging parliament to meet public expectations. Addressing the government's decision to carve out more canals from the Indus River System, he opposed the move and called for a consensus-based approach.
On economic policies, he acknowledged the government's efforts in stabilizing the economy and increasing foreign exchange reserves. He stressed empowering people, fostering investments, and promoting economic justice. He also highlighted the importance of the IT industry, advocating for digital infrastructure, IT parks, and export diversification.
Recognizing inflation and rising energy costs, he urged the government to provide relief in the upcoming budget. He reaffirmed the importance of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port for regional connectivity and economic growth.
On security, he called for strengthening law enforcement against terrorism and addressing external support for extremist activities. He urged unity to prevent a resurgence of terrorism, acknowledging the sacrifices of security forces.
He appreciated the support of friendly nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkiye, and emphasized strengthening ties with global partners. He noted recent successful counterterrorism cooperation with the US.
Expressing solidarity with Kashmiris, he condemned human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming Pakistan's unwavering support. He also highlighted the suffering of Palestinians, calling for a sovereign Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
