Punjab govt blames LHC stay orders for soaring sugar prices

The Punjab government said that the Lahore High Court's (LHC) stay orders on the implementation of the notified price of sugar and the monitoring of the sugar supply chain were one of the main reasons for the skyrocketing price of sugar.

The caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, Mohsin Naqvi, chaired a meeting on sugar prices. The food secretary informed the meeting that the LHC's stay orders had prevented the government from acquiring sugar mill records. This made it difficult for the government to track the movement of sugar and to ensure that the notified price was being implemented.

The government also said that the LHC's stay orders had created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the sugar market, which had led to hoarding and speculation. This had further exacerbated the price rise.

The government called on the LHC to lift the stay orders so that it could take measures to control the price of sugar.
