Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the Vice-Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was sent to Adiala Jail on a 14-day judicial remand in the cipher case by a special court in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The former foreign minister was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on August 19 under the Official Secrets Act, 1923 in connection with the case. The FIR was registered against him and former prime minister Imran Khan on August 15.
The FIR alleged that Qureshi and other PTI leaders had leaked a secret cipher telegram from the Pakistani embassy in Washington to unauthorized persons. The telegram contained sensitive information about the US-Pakistan relationship.
Qureshi has denied the allegations, saying that he did not leak the telegram and that he was being targeted for political reasons. He is expected to challenge the judicial remand in the Islamabad High Court.
