The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted an application to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), proposing a Rs4.66 per unit hike in electricity tariffs, potentially resulting in a significant financial burden of around Rs40 billion for consumers.
The application, filed on behalf of power distribution companies (DISCOs), seeks approval for this increase under the Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) of November 2023, with a scheduled hearing on December 27.
The CPPA's request highlights that electricity generation in February 2023 totaled 7.22 billion units, generated from various fuel sources at a basket price of Rs9.44 per unit. It specifies the breakdown of power generation: 36.50% from hydropower, 13.8% from local coal, 6.44% from imported coal, 9.21% from local gas, 10.57% from imported LNG, and 20.83% from nuclear fuel.
Previously, in December, the Federal government had also sought a Rs1.72 per unit tariff increase for K-electric consumers. This request was directed to NEPRA, citing the need for uniform tariffs nationwide. The breakdown included a Rs0.25 per unit raise for the January-March 2023 adjustment and a Rs0.47 per unit increase for the October-December 2022 adjustment, aimed at aligning tariffs across the country.
