Ronnie O’Sullivan has issued a warning about potentially quitting snooker if he faces restrictions on participating in non-tour events in China, emphasizing that his career stands at a critical juncture.

While exhibition events in East Asia offer significant financial rewards, they often overlap with dates set by the World Snooker Tour (WST). O’Sullivan and other UK-based players are obligated to play in WST tournaments and could face penalties for missing these events.

Speaking to the BBC, the seven-time world champion expressed his concerns, stating that if limitations were imposed on his ability to play extensively in China, he might retire. He mentioned a potential transition to Chinese 8-Ball if restricted from pursuing his preferred schedule.

O’Sullivan highlighted the inadequacy of opportunities in the UK, emphasizing the importance of having his efforts appreciated elsewhere. He compared the situation to an unhealthy relationship and stressed the need for respect and value in his pursuits.

Despite his desire to continue playing snooker for years, O’Sullivan has previously criticized the standard of the WST, expressing a requirement to drop significantly in rankings to feel a challenge. He reiterated his dissatisfaction with what he perceives as mediocrity in the sport, finding it unappealing and unacceptable.

The 47-year-old emphasized the minimal effort needed to maintain a top-16 position, criticizing players content with mediocrity and stating his discomfort in witnessing such acceptance. O’Sullivan expressed discontent with the quality of matches and the approach of some players towards the game.
