The Supreme Court issued notices to Punjab's Inspector General Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar, the chief secretary, and the Attorney General of Punjab following a petition by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The petition sought contempt of court proceedings against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for not addressing PTI's concerns about a fair electoral environment before the upcoming polls.
Chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa and including Justices Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Musarrat Hilali, a three-member bench heard the case, with the proceedings broadcasted live on the SC's website.
Previously, on December 22, the SC had instructed the ECP to handle PTI's complaints regarding a level playing field in the 2024 general election. In response, the ECP acknowledged PTI's reservations and sent directives to provincial election commissioners, chief secretaries, and inspector-generals to address PTI's grievances regarding candidate handling and difficulties in filing nomination papers.
