Another resolution has been introduced in the Senate, advocating a three-month delay in the scheduled 2024 general election due to security concerns.
Senator Hidayatullah, a member of the Independent Parliamentary Group in Pakistan's upper house, submitted the resolution, expressing worries about increasing attacks on prospective election candidates.
The Senate's resolution calls on the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Supreme Court to guarantee a peaceful election. Notably, an earlier resolution was passed earlier this month, initiated by independent Senator Dilawar Khan, citing extreme weather in hilly areas and deteriorating security conditions as reasons for postponing the polls. It emphasized the constitutional right to vote for all citizens and the Election Commission's responsibility to ensure inclusivity and broad regional participation for fair elections.
The resolution also highlighted concerns raised by political parties about challenges in facilitating participation in cold regions during the electoral process.
