KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to halt the 'illegal' practice of charging for parking throughout the port city of Karachi.
During a hearing presided over by SHC Judge Justice Nadeem Akhtar concerning the issue of 'illegal' charged parking, the court questioned the KMC counsel about collecting parking fees in areas beyond their jurisdiction.
The court pointedly questioned the legitimacy of charging fees when the corporation struggles to maintain roads in these areas. The SHC, while adjourning the case until December 13, requested comprehensive details regarding the parking fees and demanded a solid plan to address the matter.
The problem of charged parking in various parts of the city has become a significant concern for the residents of Karachi. Earlier in May, the SHC had reprimanded the director of charged parking and other staff members for their inadequate response regarding parking fees in DMC South, Karachi.
The court session, addressing a petition against the steep parking fees of Rs30 for bike parking in DMC South, Karachi, as opposed to the established rates of Rs10, was presided over by the then Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Justice Ahmed Ali Shaikh.
