ISLAMABAD: Sher Afzal Marwat, a former member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), revealed on Wednesday that talks with PTI have already been underway, contrary to earlier claims that negotiations were just beginning. In an interview with the media, Marwat stated that ongoing discussions have been hindered by "YouTubers," who he believes have caused significant damage to the party with their fabricated news.
Marwat, who was once closely associated with PTI, emphasized that these online influencers are a major obstacle to both the release of PTI’s founder and the party's reintegration into the national political mainstream. He accused them of spreading baseless rumors that have negatively impacted the party’s image and public perception.
According to Marwat, PTI’s founder has been informed that the party is currently incapable of staging effective street protests, signaling a loss of momentum in the party's political activities. He further disclosed that as part of the negotiations, six guarantors were initially requested, three of whom were to be from PTI’s side. Marwat identified Ali Amin as the principal guarantor involved in the discussions.
Despite these arrangements, Marwat claimed that the talks took a negative turn when they were expected to be implemented within two days. He attributed this setback to the actions of social media influencers, whose interference reportedly disrupted the process.
Reflecting on the party’s internal divisions, Marwat pointed out that individuals who had condemned the May 9 episode — a significant turning point for PTI — and testified against the party’s founder have now re-entered PTI through backdoor channels. This, he suggested, has further complicated the party’s efforts to regain its footing.
Marwat’s comments come amid increasing speculation about PTI’s future and the potential for reconciliation within the party, as well as with the broader political establishment
