KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, during the 31st Apex Committee meeting, instructed authorities to monitor the trade of stolen or snatched mobile phones and vehicles, whether sold as spare parts or in whole, in Karachi markets.
The meeting, attended by provincial ministers Sharjeel Memon and Zia Lanjar, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Corps Commander Karachi Lt Gen Babar Iftikhar, DG Ranger Major General Azhar Waqas, IG Police Ghulam Nabi Memon, and others, focused on various security measures.
CM Shah emphasized the establishment of police pickets to bolster security along the left bank of the River Indus to curb dacoity incidents. He also declared ransom recovery as terror financing and vowed to crack down on facilitators.
Comparative statistics from January to April 2023 and 2024 showed a decline in reported theft cases. In 2024, fewer two-wheelers and four-wheelers were stolen compared to 2023, along with a decrease in mobile phone snatchings.
However, there was a notable increase in vehicle snatchings in 2024 compared to 2023. The police reported conducting 467 encounters in 2024, resulting in casualties, injuries, and arrests of criminals.
Furthermore, CM Shah directed the reactivation of the Shaheen Force and the revamping of Madadgar-15, along with the deployment of additional vehicles to enhance police capabilities. He also instructed the initiation of E-tagging for repeat offenders, starting with a pilot project involving 4,000 devices.
