KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah welcomed Italy's new Consul General, Mr. Fabrizio Bieli, at CM House on Wednesday, congratulating him on his appointment. The meeting centered around enhancing trade and investment opportunities between Italy and Sindh, with the Chief Minister assuring the Consul General of his government's full cooperation.
Italian investors have expressed interest in investing in Karachi, particularly in the port city. Recalling past collaborations, Murad Ali Shah highlighted Italian firms' participation in constructing the Tarbela Dam project in the 1960s and building the Karachi-to-Hyderabad Superhighway. However, he noted that no significant projects had been initiated since then.
The Chief Minister emphasized that now is the ideal time for Italy to partner with the Sindh government on public-private partnership projects. He identified areas such as wastewater treatment and desalination projects in Karachi as potential opportunities for Italian investors.
The Sindh government has established the Sindh Economic Zones Management Company (SEZMC) to facilitate investment and economic growth.¹ The province has also implemented initiatives like the Competitive and Livable City of Karachi (CLICK) project to improve the business climate.
The meeting concluded with the Chief Minister and the Consul General agreeing to coordinate their efforts to facilitate investment in Sindh. This development is expected to strengthen trade ties between Italy and Sindh, promoting economic growth and development in the region.
