KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday advised Karachi’s traders to reserve their jokes for those who can handle them, during a ceremony organized by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in honor of the city’s business community.
Addressing the traders, CM Shah acknowledged the numerous challenges faced by Karachi, emphasizing the city's critical role in Pakistan's economy. "Karachi runs the entire country but, unfortunately, this province does not receive its due share," he stated, highlighting the city’s importance as the nation’s "growth engine."
Shah reflected on Karachi's long-standing issues, including extortion, which he said had been systematically organized, with monthly collections even from vehicles. He pointed out that Karachi’s population, ranging from 20 to 25 million, is incredibly diverse, with people from all over the world calling it home.
The CM also reflected on past efforts to address the city’s problems. “We tried to bring everyone together before, but unfortunately, it didn’t work,” he said, acknowledging that while the situation has improved since 2013, Karachi still faces threats from terrorism.
Shah emphasized his administration’s focus on infrastructure development following improvements in law and order. "After addressing security issues, we turned our attention to Karachi’s infrastructure,” he explained, underscoring his government's commitment to enhancing the city's conditions.
Earlier, prominent Karachi trader leader Atiq Mir clarified remarks he made regarding the potential swap between Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz and Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah, explaining they were made in jest and not related to their performances.
