KARACHI: The Sindh government has declared a public holiday on Friday, April 4, to mark the 46th death anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and former prime minister. A notification issued by the Sindh Chief Secretary stated that all government offices, autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils across the province will remain closed on this day.
To honor Bhutto's legacy, the PPP will host a memorial gathering in Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, where a large number of party workers and supporters from across the country are expected to gather. The event will be a solemn occasion for those wishing to pay tribute to the iconic political leader.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was instrumental in shaping Pakistan’s political landscape, was hanged on April 4, 1979, at the Central Jail in Rawalpindi. His execution followed a controversial trial in which he was sentenced to death on murder charges. The execution was upheld by then-military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq. Following his death, Bhutto was laid to rest in the ancestral graveyard at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh in Sindh, where his tomb has become a site of pilgrimage for PPP supporters.
The public holiday and the memorial gathering reflect the enduring influence of Bhutto in Pakistan's political scene, particularly within the PPP, which continues to commemorate his contributions to the country’s development.
