KARACHI: The interim administration in Sindh has taken a decisive step in addressing the rampant issue of electricity theft by forming a dedicated committee, as reported by a private news channel.

As per the official notification, the interim government has established a provincial task force, led by the Secretary of Interior, to tackle the pressing problem of electricity theft. This task force boasts the inclusion of key officials such as the Secretary of Energy, power division representatives, commissioners, DIGs (Deputy Inspector Generals), SSPs (Senior Superintendents of Police), and individuals from power distribution companies Hesco and Sepco.

Notably, the power division has launched an unprecedented crackdown on corrupt officials involved in facilitating power theft. This operation specifically targets those who enable and aid individuals in illegally siphoning electricity.

According to the division's spokesperson, a substantial number of actions have been taken against corrupt officers, with a total of 1,914 individuals facing consequences. This includes 351 officers from LESCO, 138 officers from GEPCO, 195 officers from FESCO, 219 officers from IESCO, 314 officers from MEPCO, and 299 officers from PESCO.

Moreover, the crackdown has uncovered more than 2,199 cases of power theft across various distribution companies. FIRs (First Information Reports) have been lodged against 1,955 individuals, and 21 individuals have been apprehended as part of this comprehensive effort to curb electricity theft.
