KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced a holiday for all educational institutions on February 14 (Friday) to mark Shab-e-Barat, a significant Islamic occasion.
According to a notification issued by the Sindh government, both public and private educational institutions in the province will remain closed on February 14, 2025, in observance of the 15th of Sha’ban, which corresponds to Shab-e-Barat.
The notification stated, “In pursuance of the decision taken in the Sub-committee meeting of the steering committee on education held on January 28, 2024, all public and private educational institutions, under the administrative control of the School Education and Literacy Department, government of Sindh shall remain closed on Feb 14, 2025, Friday, on account of Shab-e-Barat (15th Shaban-1446).”
Shab-e-Barat, also known as Laylat al-Bara’ah or the Night of Forgiveness, holds great religious significance. It is observed on the 15th night of the Islamic month of Shaban and is considered a night of mercy, forgiveness, and blessings. During this time, many people visit the graves of their deceased loved ones, clean and decorate them, and offer prayers for their souls. Some Muslims also observe a fast on the 15th of Shaban.
The occasion is observed with great fervor in several countries, including Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. On this night, people gather in mosques and other public spaces for collective prayers, supplications, and recitations. The holiday allows individuals to observe these religious activities with peace and devotion.
