Jamat-e-Islami (JI) leader Sirajul Haq announced his resignation from the party's top position on Monday, following the party's defeat in the general elections held on February 8.
Haq took responsibility for the electoral setback, stating in a brief message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he had stepped down as the party's chief. This decision was confirmed by Qaiser Sharif, JI's Central Secretary Information.
A meeting of the central shura, the party's decision-making body, has been called for February 17 at the party's headquarters in Mansoora, Lahore, to discuss Haq's resignation. The session will commence at 10 am.
Jamat-e-Islami, a religious-political party, failed to secure any seats in the National Assembly (NA) in the recent elections. It managed to win two seats in Sindh, three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and one in the Balochistan assemblies.
Sirajul Haq had been elected as JI's chief in 2014, succeeding Syed Munawar Hassan. He served two terms, being re-elected in 2019, and has now resigned after serving the party for a decade.
In a separate development, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the JI Karachi chief and an elected member of the Sindh Assembly, announced his resignation from PS-129, alleging electoral irregularities in the 2024 elections. Rehman claimed that despite receiving 26,000 votes according to FORM 45, he was declared the winner with 30,464 votes, with a PTI-backed independent candidate securing more votes. Consequently, he decided to resign from his seat over the alleged rigged results.
Earlier, unofficial results had declared Hafiz Naeemur Rehman as the winner of the Sindh Assembly election for PS-129, Karachi Central-VIII.
