Six killed in roof collapse at Afghan Camp in Karachi

KARACHI: At least six people, including women and children, lost their lives after the roof of a house collapsed in an Afghan camp on the outskirts of Karachi.

The tragic incident occurred early Sunday in Janjal Goth Afghan Camp, located in Gulshan-e-Maymar. According to police reports, four individuals sustained injuries, and authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collapse. The affected family was originally from Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Afghan Nationals Ordered to Leave Pakistan by March 31

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior has directed Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) holders to leave the country by March 31, 2025. The government will begin deportation proceedings from April 1 as part of the Illegal Foreigners Repatriation Program (IFRP), which has been in effect since November 1, 2023.

Earlier reports suggested a plan to evict all Afghans, but this is the first official confirmation from the Interior Ministry. The statement emphasized that no individual would be maltreated, and food and healthcare arrangements have been made for departing individuals.

Since the repatriation campaign began, over 800,000 Afghans have been sent back, though an estimated 3 million Afghans still reside in Pakistan. The government reiterated that all foreigners must follow legal procedures and abide by Pakistan’s laws.

This development is part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to regulate illegal immigration while ensuring a dignified repatriation process.
