Sugar prices have surged to unprecedented levels in Karachi and Balochistan, reaching Rs 220 per kilogram in Balochistan and ranging from Rs 230 to Rs 240 per kilogram in Karachi.
The price hike, a sudden Rs 20 per kilogram increase in Balochistan, is attributed to disrupted sugar supply due to vehicles stranded on national highways after permit suspensions. The Ministry of Commerce and Industries has clarified that Pakistan has a substantial sugar stock, exceeding 2 million metric tonnes, enough to meet the country's needs until December. This price hike further burdens consumers already grappling with inflation.
