KARACHI: A teenage girl tragically lost her life after being struck by a speeding ambulance on New MA Jinnah Road in Karachi, as the city continues to experience a surge in fatal road accidents. The incident occurred when the victim was hit by the ambulance, which was traveling at high speed. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the ambulance, identified as Muhammad Ali, has been taken into police custody for questioning. Witnesses to the accident, enraged by the incident, were seen smashing the windows of the ambulance in protest. The police, along with crime scene investigators, arrived at the hospital to conduct an investigation into the tragic event. Early reports indicate that the victim worked as a domestic worker.
This fatality is part of a disturbing rise in road accidents in Karachi, where, according to the rescue services, a total of 107 lives have been lost in the first 45 days of 2025 alone. The victims of these accidents included 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls. Additionally, over 1,400 people were injured, including 629 men, 193 women, 42 children, and 18 girls, as reported by the Chhipa Welfare Association.
The traffic police noted that a significant number of these accidents involved heavy vehicles such as dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers. In January and the first few days of February 2025, at least 32 accidents were linked to these large vehicles. In response to the increasing number of accidents, the traffic police have taken strong measures, including issuing 34,655 traffic fines, arresting 490 drivers, and canceling 532 vehicle fitness certificates.
Authorities continue to investigate the causes of these accidents, and measures are being implemented to improve road safety and reduce fatalities in the city.
