Trump sends letter to Khamenei on nuclear deal negotiations

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressing his desire to negotiate a nuclear deal. Speaking in an interview, Trump said he hoped Iran would agree to talks, emphasizing that diplomacy would be a better option for the country.

He stated that Iran faces two choices: making a deal or facing military action. Trump reiterated that he prefers negotiations, as he does not intend to harm Iran and considers its people “great.”

Iran’s foreign ministry has yet to respond to the letter, as the country observes its weekend. The White House also did not confirm the details of the letter’s recipient.

Since assuming office, Trump has taken an unconventional approach to U.S. foreign policy, shifting towards diplomacy with Russia while maintaining pressure on Iran. In 2018, he withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, a multinational agreement aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. However, he has since expressed willingness to reach a new accord to ensure Iran does not acquire such weapons.

Russia has reportedly offered to mediate between the U.S. and Iran, seeking a peaceful resolution to ongoing tensions. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov recently met with Iran’s ambassador to discuss diplomatic efforts regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. The Kremlin has reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating a peaceful outcome.
