KARACHI: A tragic accident occurred on Karachi’s University Road near Safari Park, where a water tanker ran over two motorcyclists, killing one on the spot and injuring another.
Following the incident, enraged citizens set fire to the water tanker. This is the second such accident in recent days. On February 18, another motorcyclist lost his life after being hit by a speeding water tanker near Jail Chowrangi. The deceased, identified as Gulshan Rasheed, succumbed to severe injuries on the spot. The accident triggered widespread outrage, leading to the burning of five water tankers, which were later extinguished by the fire brigade.
Karachi has witnessed a concerning rise in traffic accidents, with 107 lives lost in the first 45 days of 2025, according to rescue services. Among the victims were 78 men, 14 women, 11 children, and 4 girls. Additionally, at least 1,493 people sustained injuries in these accidents.
A report by the Chhipa Welfare Association highlights that heavy vehicles, including dumpers, trailers, and oil tankers, were involved in most accidents. In response, traffic police have taken strict measures, issuing 34,655 challans, arresting 490 drivers, and canceling 532 vehicle fitness certificates.
A four-member committee has been formed to investigate accident causes and recommend safety measures. Meanwhile, several cargo vehicles and water tankers have been torched in Landhi, Korangi, Al-Karam, and Surjani Town following recent incidents.
